About the position

The Student Assistant Specialist (FWS) - Journalism and Design position at The New School is designed for a currently enrolled student who will provide editorial and design support to The Journalism Lab. This role emphasizes the importance of ethical journalism and critical media analysis, allowing the student to engage in hands-on projects that explore contemporary issues in media. The position offers a flexible work schedule of 15 hours per week, with a focus on collaboration, reliability, and the development of journalism skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist in editing content for The Journalism Lab.
• Work with contributors to finalize content.
• Create design elements for the platform.
• Layout content on the website.
• Collaborate on audience engagement strategies.
• Provide additional support for media advocacy and journalism innovation initiatives as needed.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled student at The New School with at least one year of journalism and design experience.
• Experience with news and web design.
• Knowledge of the industry standards for journalism ethics.
• Strong writing skills to communicate effectively with the community.
• Professional demeanor and punctuality.
• Demonstrate ability to prioritize, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
