About the position

The Student Athletic Academic Coordinator - Learning Specialist at Florida State University is responsible for supporting the academic success of student-athletes, particularly those at risk or diagnosed with learning disabilities. This role involves implementing educational strategies, monitoring academic progress, and collaborating with various stakeholders to foster a holistic approach to student-athlete development. The position also includes presenting workshops, assisting with educational accommodations, and maintaining detailed records related to student-athlete educational plans.

Responsibilities

  • Support the academic endeavors of student-athletes by implementing educational measures designed by the Director of Educational Services.
  • Meet regularly with at-risk student-athletes to monitor their academic progress and educational strategies.
  • Collaborate with Student-Athlete Academic Services staff to ensure transparency and a holistic approach to academic development.
  • Present educational workshops for student-athletes.
  • Assist student-athletes in receiving educational accommodations from the Student Disability Resource Center.
  • Help student-athletes develop short and long-term goals, improve coping skills, and foster intrinsic motivation.
  • Maintain detailed records and paperwork associated with educational plans for at-risk student-athletes.
  • Attend educational testing feedback sessions and develop educational plans based on test recommendations.
  • Assist the Director of Educational Services in developing protocols related to educational testing and accessibility services.
  • Teach college success seminars for student-athletes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.
  • Experience working with student-athletes by monitoring their academic progress and employing educational strategies.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Experience in presenting educational workshops for student-athletes.
  • Experience tutoring, mentoring, or teaching students.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work under deadlines.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Attention to detail and integrity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in special education or related field and one year of experience working with post-secondary students.
  • Five years of experience working with student-athletes with diagnosed learning disabilities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs.
