About the position

The Student Career Coach position at USC Upstate is designed to provide valuable support in Career Management through various administrative, marketing, social media, and data/analytics tasks. This role allows student employees to gain hands-on experience in career preparation, exploration, and connection through Career Services programs, events, and outreach initiatives. As a Career Coach, you will serve as a front-line contact for students and alumni, assisting them with essential career-related services and resources. In the administrative capacity, you will be responsible for managing walk-in visitors and appointments, answering phone calls and emails, and ensuring that the office is adequately covered during designated hours. You will also assist in scheduling appointments and communicating with employers and business partners. Additionally, you will help maintain the career closet, which includes managing inventory and assisting students with clothing selections. Your role will also involve supporting students and alumni with resume writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies, along with other assigned duties. On the marketing front, you will create promotional materials to raise awareness about Career Services events and resources. This includes designing flyers and webpages, as well as promoting services through tabling and presentations to student organizations. In terms of social media, you will suggest and create engaging content for the Career Management Instagram and Facebook accounts, ensuring that the information shared is relevant and appealing to a diverse audience. You will also assist in curating content for the Career Management YouTube channel. In the data and analytics aspect of the role, you will help distribute and collect survey responses from students and employers following appointments and events, contributing to the continuous improvement of Career Services offerings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance and serve as the front-line contact for walk-in visitors and appointments.
  • Answer phone calls, emails, and host minimal office hours to ensure coverage.
  • Schedule appointments and communicate with employers and business partners.
  • Assist in inventory management and orderliness of the career closet, including tracking donations and student use.
  • Assist students in the career closet with clothing selections as needed.
  • Assist Upstate students and alumni with resume writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies.
  • Suggest creative weekly posts about resources, services, and events for Instagram and Facebook accounts.
  • Make weekly updates to Instagram and Facebook content once approved by Career Management staff.
  • Create additional social media campaigns to promote Handshake and build awareness for Big Interview.
  • Assist in content curation for the Career Management YouTube channel to ensure relevance and appeal to a broad audience.
  • Create promotional materials to build awareness of Career Services' events, programs, and resources.
  • Promote Handshake and other services to the campus community through tabling, presentations, and individual appointments.
  • Assist with distributing and collecting survey responses from students and employers after appointments, presentations, and career events.

Requirements

  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Ability to think critically and tactfully problem solve.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to articulate thoughts and ideas to various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using digital technologies to enhance outreach and awareness of Career Services resources.
  • Ability to engage with campus leaders to build relationships and partnerships.
  • Strong multi-tasking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work well with other Career Coaches and campus leaders.
  • Professionalism in networking and front-line contact.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively.
  • Comfortable with occasional public speaking opportunities.
  • Reliable with a strong work ethic.
