About the position

The Student Support Coordinator at School on Wheels, Inc. plays a vital role in supporting the educational needs of unhoused children in Southern California. This position involves outreach and recruitment of students, strengthening relationships between students, parents, and volunteers, and collaborating with community partners to enhance educational opportunities. The coordinator will also conduct assessments, track student outcomes, and organize events to celebrate student achievements.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct student outreach at shelters, community resource centers, motels, and schools.
  • Collaborate with shelters, after-school programs, schools, advocacy groups, and social service agencies to enhance the program.
  • Attend shelter parent meetings and events to provide resources to parents/guardians.
  • Identify students for scholarships and post-secondary support opportunities.
  • Coordinate and organize site-specific events to enhance partnerships and celebrate student achievements.
  • Work with Volunteer Engagement Coordinators to match students with volunteers and deliver necessary supplies.
  • Ensure pre and post-assessments are completed and track success stories and alumni.
  • Utilize Salesforce to maintain accurate student and partnership information.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience working with students or families experiencing homelessness.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.
  • Knowledge of IEPs, Common Core, and student rights.
  • Comfortable with outreach in various capacities, including working in homeless shelters.
  • Valid California driver's license and auto insurance for local travel.
  • Cultural sensitivity and empathy towards students experiencing homelessness.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Highly organized with efficient time management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, experience with Salesforce and Google Suite is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community outreach for educational programs.
  • Familiarity with the local community resources in Whittier and Long Beach.
