About the position

The Student Engineer position at PacifiCorp is designed for individuals who are currently enrolled in an accredited engineering college or university, specifically targeting those in their sophomore year or higher in fields such as electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering. This role is pivotal in assisting the engineering team with various tasks related to the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the company's transmission and distribution systems. The position is based in either Salt Lake City, UT, or Portland, OR, and offers a flexible schedule that accommodates the academic commitments of the student engineer. In this role, the student engineer will collaborate closely with company engineers to perform engineering studies and analyses of substation equipment, protection and control equipment, transmission structures, and distribution equipment. The responsibilities include developing moderately complex engineering studies of limited scope, conducting electrical network data analysis, and presenting findings to company staff. Additionally, the student will be involved in reviewing drawings to ensure compliance with company and industry standards, researching and testing equipment provided by suppliers, and updating company standards and drawings as necessary. The position requires a commitment of no more than 20 hours per week, allowing students to balance their work and academic responsibilities effectively. This opportunity not only provides practical experience in the engineering field but also fosters the development of essential communication and interpersonal skills, as the student engineer will need to work cross-functionally to understand project requirements and present alternatives and recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist company engineers in performing engineering studies and analysis of substation equipment, protection & control equipment, transmission structures & hardware, and distribution equipment.
  • Develop moderately complex engineering studies of limited scope and prepare data for analysis.
  • Perform electrical network data analysis and present results to company staff.
  • Conduct drawing reviews to ensure adherence to company and industry standards.
  • Research and test equipment provided by suppliers.
  • Update company standards and drawings.
  • Analyze the system design, programming, and modification.

Requirements

  • Enrolled full time in an accredited engineering college/university.
  • Sophomore standing or higher in electrical/mechanical/civil engineering or a related field.
  • Ability to interact favorably with project and work teams.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.
