About the position

Cenovus Energy Inc. is offering an exciting Co-op opportunity for students in the field of Instrument & Electrical Engineering. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to gain hands-on experience in a refining environment while working alongside industry-leading professionals. As a student engineer, you will be involved in meaningful and diverse assignments that will challenge you and help you develop the skills necessary for a successful career in engineering. The role is part of a collaborative team that is engaged in important projects, providing you with the mentorship and knowledge needed to thrive in the industry. The Co-op program at Cenovus is structured to provide a multi-discipline experience, allowing you to participate in various aspects of electrical and instrumentation engineering. You will have the opportunity to engage in networking events organized by the New Grad Committee, which includes group mentoring sessions with senior and executive leaders, technical presentations, and holiday celebrations. This support network will include direct leaders, program leads, human resources, peers, and mentors, ensuring that you have the guidance needed throughout your work term. In this role, you will be expected to set structured goals and participate in performance evaluations, which will help you track your progress and development. Additionally, you will have the chance to present your work-term learnings to the Cenovus Leadership team, showcasing your contributions and insights gained during your time with the company. For students relocating for this opportunity, a lump sum relocation payment may be available to assist with moving expenses. It is important to note that candidates must have their own means of transportation, as public transportation is not available in field locations.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in Preventative Maintenance Program work such as IR scanning, transformer and motor testing, and protective relay testing.
  • Help with smaller maintenance projects and capital projects.
  • Assist the Electrical Maintenance Supervisor in the field.
  • Conduct data collection, print creation, and review.
  • Work with Instrumentation & Electrical Engineers (I/E) on various projects.
  • Manage small-scale electrical and instrumentation/controls projects, including installation and upgrades.
  • Assist with field support for large-scale instrumentation/electrical projects, including PMCS network, substations, and PLC system upgrades.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology Undergraduate Program at an accredited post-secondary institution at the time of the intended work term and returning to full-time studies after the work term.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in either a master's or Ph.D. program at an accredited post-secondary institution may also be considered.
  • Strong academic performance is required.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week during the scheduled semester.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States is necessary.
  • A valid US Driver's License is required as the position involves operating a motor vehicle.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in a related field is considered an asset.
  • Availability for multiple work terms is preferred.
