About the position

The Student Life Assistant Director is a full-time, 11-month live-on position at Pratt Munson College of Art and Design, located on the Utica, NY campus. This role is primarily responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of Residence Life while also sharing responsibilities within the Student Life department, which includes student conduct and Title IX roles. The position requires flexibility, as it includes evening and weekend hours, and participation in the professional staff on-call rotation is mandatory. The Student Life Office at Pratt Munson is dedicated to the holistic development of a vibrant student body, consisting of approximately 200 college art students who spend two years on the Utica campus before transitioning to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY for the remainder of their undergraduate studies. The Assistant Director will directly supervise the Residence Life Coordinator and indirectly oversee a team of 9 Resident Assistants. Key responsibilities include managing housing operations, which encompass room assignments, damage billing, and crisis response, as well as organizing the College's conduct process and training conduct hearing officers. Additionally, the Assistant Director will receive training as a Title IX adjudicator and advisor, further enhancing their role in supporting student welfare and compliance with federal regulations. Responsibilities

  • Manage all operational aspects of student housing, including budget management, housing placements, and damage billing.
  • Supervise and mentor the Residence Life Coordinator and provide feedback to the Residence Life team.
  • Organize and lead training sessions for Resident Assistants to develop leadership and community-building skills.
  • Oversee the student conduct process and serve as a hearing officer for policy violations.
  • Maintain and organize student conduct records and train conduct hearing officers.
  • Act as part of the professional on-call rotation and provide crisis intervention in emergencies.
  • Advise students on transitioning to college life and refer them to necessary services.
  • Manage residence life programming and assist in designing community and educational programming.
  • Assist in planning major events such as Orientation, Commencement, and Family & Alumni weekend.
  • Participate in organization-wide committees and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of experience in Residence Life and/or student leadership.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, faculty, and students.
  • Critical thinking, consensus building, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, changing work environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Education, Counseling, or a related field.
