About the position

The Student Medical Assistant is a nonexempt role responsible for providing various patient care and clerical duties in a healthcare setting under the supervision of a Medical Assistant Preceptor. This position is designed for students or recent graduates of medical assistant programs, allowing them to gain practical experience while supporting healthcare professionals in delivering quality care to patients. The role encompasses clinical responsibilities, clerical tasks, and maintaining a clean and organized environment, all while adhering to the standards of practice and patient care protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfills patient care responsibilities including checking schedules, organizing patient flow, and assisting patients as needed.
  • Collects patient history and performs screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Assists physicians and nurses with various procedures and charting.
  • Relays instructions to patients and families, answers calls, and provides pertinent information.
  • Handles clerical responsibilities such as managing medical records, scheduling appointments, and verifying patient demographics.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of exam/procedure rooms and equipment to ensure infection control.
  • Respects and promotes patient rights and responds appropriately to emergency codes.
  • Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities including checking vital signs, drug administration, and assisting in minor surgeries.

Requirements

  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) and TB certification through the American Lung Association (ALA).
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Student or graduate of a CCMA or CMA Program.
  • Must be in good standing with no corrective actions or attendance issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting or healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
