About The Position

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) position in the Emergency Department at St. Vincent Medical Center is designed for nursing students to gain practical experience in a clinical setting. The role involves assisting registered nurses in providing patient care across all age groups, performing various clinical and clerical tasks, and ensuring effective communication within the healthcare team. This position is part-time and on-call, allowing flexibility while supporting the hospital's mission to deliver high-quality healthcare.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a professional school of nursing and have successfully completed one clinical nursing course and one clinical experience.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Demonstrated competency in required clinical skills and competencies.
  • Basic computer literacy and technological abilities are necessary.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and patient information.
  • Good interpersonal skills and effective communication with the multidisciplinary team and patients.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting prior to this role.
  • Completion of a basic computer class.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with measures of comfort and activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, toileting, dressing, and grooming.
  • Support patients with mobility through active and passive range of motion, lifting, turning, repositioning, ambulation, and transportation.
  • Perform routine patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse, including obtaining specimens, recording vital signs, and applying dressings.
  • Explain procedures to patients to alleviate apprehension and encourage cooperation.
  • Assist in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients, including preparing patient charts and related paperwork.
  • Perform clerical duties such as answering phones, obtaining and stocking supplies, and documenting patient information.
  • Communicate and document pertinent patient information and services provided.
  • Participate in hand-off/report of patient and departmental needs upon arrival and departure.
