About The Position

The Student Nurse Externship at Hackensack Meridian Health is a 10-week program designed for nursing students to gain practical experience while earning a stipend. Under the guidance of registered nurses, externs will practice essential nursing skills in various healthcare settings across New Jersey, enhancing their clinical competencies and confidence in patient care.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a Board of Nursing approved BSN program or an HMH affiliated Associate Degree program.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher strongly preferred.
• Ability to work varied days and hours.
• American Heart Association BLS certification required.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in a healthcare setting is a plus.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse.
• Perform ongoing assessments focusing on physiological, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
• Collect and document data including intake and output, vital signs, and weights.
• Provide hygienic care, assist with positioning, and support pre/post-operative care.
• Ensure a safe patient environment by responding promptly to call lights and reporting changes in patient conditions.
• Identify and address the specific needs of diverse patient populations, communicating effectively with patients and caregivers.
• Adhere to the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies standards.
