About the position

The Student Nurse Intern position at Lowell General Hospital is designed for nursing students to gain practical experience under the supervision of professional nurses. The role focuses on assisting in direct patient care, ensuring patient safety, and providing environmental support within the hospital setting. This full-time position allows interns to engage with patients and contribute to their care while developing essential nursing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the professional registered nurse in the functional care of patients, ensuring efficient and patient-centered care appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population.
  • Performs delegated tasks and communicates all findings/concerns to the professional nurse.
  • Provides or assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) in a safe, efficient, and respectful manner.
  • Greets patients, families, visitors, and other staff utilizing the principles of hospital service standards.
  • Assists patients including undressing, connecting to a monitor, records vital signs, and reviews list of medications with patients.
  • Performs all clerical duties involved with ordering labs, x-rays, EKG's, and procedures.
  • Prepares room for admission/transfer/discharge, assuring standardized equipment is ready for use.
  • Transports or accompanies patients as necessary to other areas of the hospital in an efficient, safe, and respectful manner.
  • Cleans beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs during downtimes and between transports.
  • Stocks equipment, supplies, and linens to ensure adequate par levels to meet patients' needs.
  • Acts as a sitter or transporter as requested by the nurse, adhering to the sitter guidelines.
  • Answers the telephone, call lights, and greets visitors using proper professional etiquette.
  • Performs the necessary tasks to ensure a clean, clutter-free, and safe work environment for patients and staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program and completion of one clinical rotation.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
