About the position

The Student Peer Mentor position at Colorado Mountain College is designed to provide first-year students with a supportive and welcoming environment. The mentor assists students in navigating campus resources, achieving academic goals, and utilizing college technology. This role involves personalized academic support, tutoring referrals, and helping students identify their interests and strengths. The position is part-time, limited to 28 hours per week, and requires flexibility in work hours based on student needs and scheduled activities.

Responsibilities

  • Educate mentees on available campus resources and facilitate connections to these resources.
  • Train mentees to navigate college technology.
  • Provide personalized academic support and/or tutoring referrals as needed.
  • Assist mentees in identifying interests, strengths, and goals.
  • Develop action plans with specific steps to help mentees reach their goals.
  • Offer support, patience, and enthusiasm while guiding mentees.
  • Evaluate mentee's time management, organizational skills, and learning strategies.
  • Guide mentees through online tools to identify learning styles and discuss corresponding academic approaches.
  • Assist in problem-solving and provide positive reinforcement.
  • Communicate closely with CMC student services staff regarding mentees' ongoing needs and progress.
  • Observe and creatively generate ideas for exceptional Peer Mentor services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be an active student enrolled at Colorado Mountain College (CMC) with at least 24 earned credits.
  • Possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of standard administrative and business methods and procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software and various computer applications.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse student population and communicate effectively in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) or conversational language abilities preferred.
