About the position

The Student Services Advisor 4 at the University of California, Berkeley, plays a crucial role in supporting the Masters in Biotechnology program within the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology. This position involves a wide range of responsibilities including academic advising, recruitment, admissions, and internship management. The advisor will work closely with faculty and students to ensure a supportive learning environment and assist in the successful completion of academic programs. The role also includes cultivating relationships with commercial biotech companies to facilitate student internships and career opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide complex student services to management, faculty, and students.
  • Advise faculty on departmental policies and procedures; review students' progress and advise on degree completion requirements.
  • Establish individualized advising plans and maintain detailed student academic records.
  • Coordinate and implement advising, orientation, coursework, internship placement, and career advising.
  • Plan and design workshops and meetings for students, including program evaluation meetings and career workshops.
  • Counsel students regarding Capstone degree requirements and ensure accurate final degree checks.
  • Maintain departmental degree lists and reconcile differences with Graduate Division statistics.
  • Identify and refer intricate student issues and recommend solutions.
  • Advise on grade appeals, academic petitions, and disability accommodations.
  • Coordinate outreach strategies for recruitment and admissions, and implement outreach programs with targeted institutions.
  • Advise on visa and immigration policies for international students and scholars.
  • Coordinate internship success workshops and ensure students are prepared for internships.
  • Make recommendations for the improvement of the MCB Master in Biotechnology program and analyze current policies.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and evaluating risks.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and multicultural competencies.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
