About the position

The Student Success Coach at Westerly Middle School is responsible for assisting in the instruction and provision of accommodations for students with mild learning and behavioral challenges. This role involves developing effective personal relationships with students, reinforcing learning, and supporting teachers in various instructional duties. The position requires patience, empathy, and flexibility, and includes both educational and clerical responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and adheres to strict confidentiality requirements regarding students, parents and other staff.
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Physically able to restrain a student if necessary, using CPI Techniques and standards.
  • Potentially assists the teacher in planning, modification and implementation of curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Uses age and developmentally appropriate instructional procedures and reinforcement techniques.
  • Assists children with academic and/or functional skills of previously introduced concepts following teacher instruction and direction.
  • Follow the teacher or other appropriate professional's directions.
  • Monitors and supervises students and/or continues lessons during short-term student absences from class.
  • Prepares and gathers materials and supplies.
  • Exhibits self-control and good judgment.
  • Under direction of the building principal, supervises students during play periods, lunch periods, detention and/or during student arrival and dismissal both indoors and out of doors.
  • Receives additional training, if deemed necessary, for the position.
  • Maintains order by reinforcing school rules in all settings including recess, lunch and bus.
  • Provides positive reinforcement as dictated by the Behavioral Support Plan.
  • Participates in Professional Development as assigned.
  • Performs Restorative Justice practices when working with behavioral students.
  • Supports the overall order and operation of the school.
  • Work with children who have special needs in a sensitive and effective manner.
  • Respond simultaneously to a variety of needs for students and staff while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity to individual needs.
  • Possess and demonstrate effective communications skills.
  • Proficient in essential computer applications as required.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Prefer three to six months of experience in a school environment providing support to students.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Past restorative training encouraged.
