About the position

The Student Trainee (Financial Litigation) position is an exciting opportunity for current students to gain valuable experience within the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Indiana. This role is part of the Pathways Program, which is designed to provide students with practical work experience while they pursue their education. The selected candidate will support the Financial Litigation Unit by providing clerical and automation support, which may include using various software applications such as word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and database management. The position is located in Hammond, Indiana, a vibrant area that offers a low-cost, high-quality living environment while being in close proximity to Chicago's cultural and entertainment options. As a Student Trainee, you will be responsible for producing a variety of documents using advanced word processing software, sorting and calculating data from electronic databases, and communicating with debtors to ensure successful debt collection. You will also process payments received from debtors and review computerized debt collection records. The responsibilities of the position will increase in complexity as you gain more training and experience, providing a comprehensive learning opportunity in the field of financial litigation. This is not a short-term position; the ideal candidate will be expected to work year-round on a flexible schedule that accommodates their class schedule. The position can be either full-time or part-time, with part-time hours ranging from 20 to 32 hours per week and full-time hours being at least 40 hours per week. Interns may also have the opportunity to be converted to a term, career-conditional, or career appointment upon successful completion of their educational and work experience requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide office clerical and automation support to the Financial Litigation Unit.
  • Produce a variety of documents using advanced word processing software functions.
  • Sort, calculate, and retrieve data from electronic databases or spreadsheets to produce reports, charts, and graphs.
  • Obtain and analyze financial information on debtors.
  • Communicate with debtors to assure successful collection of debts.
  • Process monies received by debtors.
  • Review and reconcile computerized debt collection records.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship: Must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Minimum Age: Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Selective Service: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration with the Selective Service System.
  • Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon satisfactory preemployment adjudication including fingerprint, credit, and tax checks, and drug testing.
  • Student Status Requirements: Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited educational institution and in good academic standing.
  • Grade-Point-Average (GPA) Requirement: Must have at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Typing Proficiency Requirement: Must type at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors.
