About the position

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is dedicated to promoting efficiency and effectiveness while preventing waste, fraud, and abuse in departmental programs. The Student Trainee (Human Resources Specialist) position is an entry-level role designed for students who are currently enrolled in a qualifying educational institution. This position will provide the opportunity to gain practical experience in human resources, specifically in training and development, under the direct supervision of the Chief Learning Officer (CLO). The incumbent will engage in a variety of structured work assignments that support the day-to-day operations of the OIG training and development program. In this role, the Student Trainee will perform a range of activities related to training and development, assisting the Office of Assistant Inspector General for Administration and the Office of Training and Development. Responsibilities include providing support with learning management systems, responding to helpdesk tickets, and preparing summary evaluation reports after training sessions. The trainee will also assist in the duplication and assembly of training materials, manage logistics for training sessions, and ensure effective communication regarding training needs and materials. Additionally, the trainee will serve as the SharePoint champion for the training and development site, ensuring that the information is accurate and accessible to OIG staff. This internship is part of the Pathways Program, which aims to provide students with paid opportunities to work in federal agencies while exploring the benefits and conditions of federal employment. The position is temporary and not to exceed one year, with the possibility of non-competitive conversion to a term or permanent appointment if certain criteria are met. Candidates must maintain good academic standing and provide verification of their academic status throughout the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support with learning management systems in all functional areas.
  • Assist with responding to helpdesk tickets and issues related to upcoming schedule offerings.
  • Prepare summary evaluation reports upon completion of each internal training session.
  • Assist staff with the duplication and assembly of training materials.
  • Manage the set-up and clean-up of training sessions.
  • Communicate timely regarding materials, scheduled offerings, instructor needs, and technical needs.
  • Support all training conducted in the OIG Training Center, including program materials and supplies.
  • Research and locate training materials and documentation as requested by staff or the CLO.
  • Maintain the training and development SharePoint site, ensuring information is comprehensive and accurate.
  • Produce high-quality work products that align with the goals and objectives of the OIG.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution.
  • Must not plan to graduate before the Fall 2025 semester.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher is required.
  • Must sign a Pathways Student Agreement.
  • Must maintain status as a current student and good academic standing.
