About the position

The Office Assistant position in the Communications and Marketing department at McDaniel College is designed for current students enrolled at the college, specifically those eligible for work study and campus employment. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a vibrant and creative environment that caters to the communication and marketing needs of the college. The Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) is known for its fast-paced and dynamic atmosphere, where responsibilities can change daily. As an Office Assistant, you will play a crucial role in helping the department maintain organization and efficiency. Your primary responsibilities will include providing administrative support, which involves submitting and reviewing entries for the college's event calendar, assisting in the writing of news releases and other marketing materials, and creating Excel spreadsheets to aid in departmental analysis and planning. Additionally, you will conduct internet and social media research, update information on the college's website, and assist with social media posts on the college's official accounts. Tracking media coverage and managing the department's email and voicemail systems will also be part of your duties. This position requires a commitment of 6-8 hours per week, with the office open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and may include some evening or weekend assignments as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Submit and/or review submissions for the college's event calendar.
  • Support the writing of news releases and other public relations/marketing materials.
  • Create Excel spreadsheets that support analysis and planning of department staff.
  • Conduct internet and social media research, including updating information on the College's website and assisting with social media posts on the College's official accounts.
  • Help track media coverage.
  • Check the department email account and voicemail system, ensuring messages get sent to appropriate team members.
  • Assist with administrative needs such as mailings, filing, organizing photos and stories, organizing supplies, and distributing mail.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student at McDaniel College
  • Self-starter with outgoing personality, good communication and writing skills
  • Attention to detail required
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office needed, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite desirable
  • Interest in photography or videography a plus.
