About the position

The Sub-System Lead Engineer (SSLE) at VMEC is a key individual contributor responsible for the design, development, and implementation of embedded controllers that influence vehicle motion. This role involves leading complex sub-system analysis, defining functional controls and requirements, and ensuring compliance with specifications throughout the vehicle development lifecycle. The SSLE will focus on electrification propulsion controls, optimizing system operations for electric and hybrid vehicles, and contributing to GM's vision of a world with zero crashes, emissions, and congestion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex sub-system analysis to define functional controls and requirements, including I/O Interface requirements.
  • Leverage physical and virtual environments to establish test cases and acceptance criteria for sub-systems.
  • Create and maintain Sub-System Technical Specification (SSTS) and Behavioral Test Specifications (BTS) documents.
  • Create and maintain sub-system specifications in requirements management software, including Functional Architecture Documents (FADs).
  • Lead root cause analysis for sub-system related issues and translate solutions into new or revised requirements.
  • Lead sub-system level FMEAs and collaborate on System and Component FMEAs.
  • Collaborate with Controls and Software Engineers to review software implementation and manage sub-system requirements in Jira.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in the field of expertise.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with independent judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with team members and customers.
  • Physics-based understanding of the Voice-of-Customer.
  • Ability to effectively communicate issues, status, and recommendations to leadership.
  • Proven project management skills and ability to teach others.
  • Ability to prioritize work with limited direction from manager.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or PhD in Engineering with an emphasis on Controls.
  • Experience or knowledge in EV and Hybrid Operating Strategy execution.
  • Experience in EV Driveline Dynamics management.
  • Experience leveraging simulation environments for testing or requirements generation.
  • Experience with requirements management tools like Doors, DNG, Markdown.
  • Experience with change management tools like Jira, GIT, IBM RTC.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering and SysML Tools.
  • Experience with OBD regulations requirements.
  • Experience with safety critical systems (e.g., ISO-26262).
