About the position

The Sub-System Lead Engineer (SSLE) for VMEC Electrification Propulsion ART is a key individual contributor role responsible for the design, development, and implementation of embedded controllers that influence vehicle motion. This position focuses on optimizing the operation of electrified vehicles, ensuring maximum range and drivability through advanced control strategies and system management. The SSLE will engage in the entire vehicle development lifecycle, from requirements definition to testing and problem resolution, while contributing to General Motors' vision of a sustainable future with zero crashes, emissions, and congestion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex sub-system analysis to define functional controls and requirements, including I/O Interface requirements.
  • Leverage physical and virtual environments to establish test cases and acceptance criteria for sub-systems.
  • Create and maintain Sub-System Technical Specification (SSTS) and Behavioral Test Specifications (BTS) documents.
  • Manage sub-system specifications in requirements management software, including Functional Architecture Documents (FADs) and Context Diagrams.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for sub-system related issues and translate solutions into new or revised requirements.
  • Lead sub-system level FMEAs and collaborate on System and Component FMEAs.
  • Review software implementation with Controls and Software Engineers to ensure compliance with requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in the field of expertise.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with independent judgment and decision-making capabilities.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships and resolve issues.
  • Physics-based understanding of the Voice-of-Customer.
  • Ability to effectively communicate issues, status, and recommendations to leadership.
  • Proven project management skills and ability to teach others.
  • Ability to prioritize work with limited direction from manager.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or PhD in Engineering with an emphasis on Controls.
  • Experience in EV and Hybrid Operating Strategy execution and constraints management.
  • Knowledge in EV Driveline Dynamics management.
  • Experience leveraging simulation environments for testing or requirements generation.
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools and change management tools.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering and SysML Tools.
  • Experience with Scaled Agile Development (SAFe) process.
  • Knowledge of OBD regulations requirements and safety critical systems.
