About the position

The position is responsible for investigating, evaluating, reserving, negotiating, and resolving assigned Subrogation claims at Travelers. The role involves conducting thorough investigations, determining liability, confirming subrogation potential, and maximizing recoveries through negotiation and settlement of claims. The position requires maintaining compliance with quality standards and regulations while providing technical support to field staff and business partners throughout the claim life cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates each claim to obtain relevant facts necessary to evaluate recovery potential.
  • Identifies the cause of loss and responsible party targets, developing theories of liability.
  • Delivers consistent service quality and effective diary management to ensure timely claim handling.
  • Directs the preservation of evidence and hires experts for specific investigative activities.
  • Verifies the nature and extent of the loss and keeps an effective diary management system.
  • Evaluates liability to assess subrogation potential at required time intervals.
  • Develops and employs creative resolution strategies for claims.
  • Negotiates subrogation recoveries with responsible parties and their carriers.
  • Develops litigation plans and manages legal expenses for effective resolution.
  • Tracks and controls legal expenses to assure cost-effective resolution.
  • Updates appropriate parties with new facts impacting liability analysis and settlement options.
  • Attends and presents at roundtables for collaboration on technical expertise.
  • Mentors and coaches less experienced subrogation professionals.
  • Determines settlement value by assessing the extent of liability and legally recoverable damages.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years subrogation claim handling experience preferred.
  • Experience utilizing computer technology, such as Microsoft Office and database software preferred.
  • Intermediate analytical thinking skills.
  • Intermediate judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Intermediate communication skills.
  • Intermediate negotiation skills preferred.
  • Intermediate knowledge of insurance contracts and principles of investigation.
  • Intermediate skills in value determination and settlement techniques.
  • Basic legal knowledge.
  • Intermediate organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and work independently.
  • Basic typing skills for data entry and search.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in property and casualty subrogation claim handling.
  • Successful completion of Travelers Subrogation Training Program.
