The Substitute Teacher at Episcopal Children's Services Inc. plays a crucial role in providing a nurturing, stimulating, and safe environment for children. This position is designed for individuals who can step in as the Primary Caregiver/Teacher when a regular classroom teacher is absent. The Substitute Teacher is responsible for familiarizing themselves with the day's planned activities and assisting in implementing culturally sensitive educational activities that are developmentally appropriate for each child's age and language, whether in an individual or small group setting. The role emphasizes the importance of creating a warm, loving, and positive environment, utilizing positive guidance techniques, and adhering to the ECS Discipline Policy. In addition to fostering nurturing relationships that encourage social and emotional development, the Substitute Teacher must maintain compliance with all federal, state, local, and accreditation standards, including those set forth by NAEYC, APPLE, ECS, DCF, and Early Head Start. Responsibilities also include following policies and procedures regarding medical and dental emergencies, managing the administration and storage of medications, and ensuring safe practices to prevent injuries to children and themselves. The Substitute Teacher is expected to maintain sanitation and hygiene procedures and participate in the upkeep of the center. Effective communication with families is essential, as the Substitute Teacher should encourage parent involvement and ensure that parents feel comfortable discussing their children with staff. The role also involves eating with children to promote proper eating habits and conversation, following infants' individual feeding schedules, and holding infants who cannot sit independently during feeding times. Regular communication with other staff members is necessary to better serve children and families, which includes attending staff meetings, trainings, and sharing information. A cooperative, positive, and supportive attitude is expected within the program, along with maintaining appropriate record-keeping, including children's portfolios when covering for extended staff absences. The Substitute Teacher may also assist with kitchen and cleaning duties as assigned, although these tasks are not exhaustive and may include other related duties as required.
