About the position

The Substance Abuse Counselor position at Lighthouse Therapeutic Services involves facilitating group therapy sessions for clients in the Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Program. The role focuses on providing education, relapse prevention, and individual counseling services to clients dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. The counselor will also be responsible for conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and providing crisis counseling as needed.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate daily substance use education and relapse prevention groups.
• Provide individual counseling services to clients in treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders.
• Record daily progress notes for each client encounter.
• Utilize assessment and interview skills to determine appropriate treatment plans.
• Complete clinical/biopsychosocial assessments for clients.
• Conduct regular and random urine drug screenings of patients.
• Make recommendations for individual care based on assessments.
• Develop and implement person-centered treatment plans reflecting the identified needs of clients.
• Provide crisis counseling as needed.
• Perform other work-related projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in a human services field with CSAC certification.
• Master's Degree with an active license to practice in Virginia (LPC, LCSW, or other LMHP) preferred.
• Knowledge of individual, group, and family counseling theories and practices related to mental health and substance use disorders.
• Familiarity with ASAM CRITERIA and DSM 5 diagnostic criteria.
• Understanding of ethical issues concerning dual relationships and confidentiality.
• Experience with various substance use inventories and assessments.
• Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing techniques and relapse prevention.
