About the position

The Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) plays a crucial role in providing addiction counseling services to residents diagnosed with addictive disorders. This position involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and facilitating both individual and group counseling sessions. The SAC collaborates with primary therapists to ensure comprehensive care and assists residents in achieving their treatment goals while maintaining clinical documentation and compliance with contract regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide addiction counseling services to residents diagnosed with addictive disorders.
  • Assist in assessments coordination, planning, implementing, and facilitating addiction programming.
  • Work with the resident's primary therapist to develop treatment plan goals related to addiction counseling.
  • Prepare and maintain clinical documentation of client treatment plans and progress.
  • Provide screening, evaluation, referrals, and complete assessments for potential clients with substance use and co-occurring disorders.
  • Develop, implement, and document individualized comprehensive treatment plans for all clients assigned to caseload.
  • Provide weekly one-on-one counseling sessions for each assigned client.
  • Monitor therapeutic progress relevant to treatment goals.
  • Refer clients to family counseling sessions when appropriate.
  • Prepare and facilitate group sessions and submit timely documentation.
  • Complete discharge and aftercare plans for all clients prior to discharge from treatment.
  • Supervise attendance of scheduled self-help groups and document attendance.
  • Maintain all client records in accordance with contract regulations.
  • Assist with ongoing audits of client files to ensure compliance with contract regulations.
  • Maintain close follow-up status on assigned residents throughout their participation in the program.
  • Utilize sociological work techniques to assist individuals in gaining insight and motivation for behavior change.
  • Attend all required clinical meetings.
  • Make appropriate referrals using available community resources.
  • Coordinate services with the assigned case manager as needed.
  • Serve as a member of the Program Review Team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Four-year college degree in a relevant field.
  • Certification and experience in the substance abuse field.
  • Relevant experience in providing addiction counseling services.
  • License in an addiction counseling specialty (e.g., Certified Addiction Counselor, Registered Addiction Counselor) or certification as a Counselor in Training under supervision.
  • Current CPR Certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a corrections facility medical clinic.
  • State license in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology.
