About the position

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a collaborative, detail-oriented Substation Drafter to join our exciting consulting firm in the power utility space. The Drafter would be part of our Substation Engineering Group and prepare structural and electrical drawings for energy infrastructure projects. This position requires the drafter to work closely with engineers and consultants to create drawings for high voltage equipment, structures, foundations, and electrical schematics. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients. The role involves computer-aided design and drafting of all engineering products and deliverables. The Drafter will collaborate with engineers and other drafters to correct discrepancies in drawings and designs. Typical drafting tasks include creating substation layouts, sections, structural and foundation details, bills of materials, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams. The Drafter will also be responsible for updating documentation, including checklists, drawing lists, conduit schedules, circuit schedules, drawing requests, and project tracking, primarily using Microsoft Excel and Word. Self-checking all work performed to ensure accuracy before submission to the supervisor or designated reviewer is crucial. The Drafter must understand and meet project schedules and quality requirements, completing drawings accurately and quickly. The ability to handle multiple projects concurrently while maintaining flexibility to changes in work assignments is essential. Additionally, the Drafter will actively assist in the delivery of complete projects, which may involve phone or email correspondence, attending meetings, and preparing other project documents required for project completion. Interdepartmental support may also be required as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Computer-aided design and drafting of all engineering products and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other drafters to correct discrepancies in drawings and designs.
  • Draft substation layout, sections, structural and foundation details, bill of materials, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Update documentation including checklists, drawing lists, conduit schedules, circuit schedules, drawing requests, and project tracking primarily in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Self-check all work performed to ensure accuracy prior to submission to the supervisor or designee.
  • Understand and meet project schedule and quality requirements.
  • Complete drawings accurately and quickly.
  • Handle multiple projects concurrently and maintain flexibility to changes in work assignments.
  • Assist in the delivery of complete projects, including correspondence, attending meetings, and preparing project documents.
  • Provide interdepartmental support as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Driven for results, decision quality, priority setting, planning, conflict management, informing, listening, dealing with ambiguity, and customer-focused.
  • Ability to invite and accept constructive feedback.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to function in a team environment and culture of cooperation and collaboration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates degree in Design & Drafting Technology or related field of study.
  • 3+ years of CAD experience, with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience preferred.
  • Previous experience drafting structural and electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of Transmission, Distribution, or Substation Projects.
