About the position

Leidos Engineering is seeking a skilled Substation Drafter to join their team in the Houston area. This role involves drafting substation design packages and documents for electric power substations, ensuring adherence to accepted practices and standards for quality and safety. The position is remote-capable, with a preference for candidates who can commute to offices in Portland, Chicago, Framingham, or Houston. The Substation Drafter will work under the mentorship of experienced designers and engineering leads, contributing to various drafting and detailing functions using MicroStation and AutoCAD software for utility clients.

Responsibilities

  • Complete drafting assignments on Protection & Control, SCADA, and Communications drawings including Single Line Diagrams, Schematics, and Control Building Layouts.
  • Draft Physical Electrical drawings such as General Arrangement, Electrical Plans, and Structural Details.
  • Support remote office overflow CAD workload as needed, coordinating with other CAD leads.
  • Develop skills in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and work with increased independence.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1+ year of relevant substation-specific drafting and detailing experience with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of drafting principles, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to create and/or modify drawings from engineer-provided markups with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills within a team environment.
  • Highly organized and efficient.
  • Ability to comprehend and implement a wide range of client CAD standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates Degree in design, drafting, or a similar field.
  • Experience with 3-D modelling in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with Windows XP/VISTA/7 operating systems.
  • Knowledge of VBA and/or AutoLisp.
  • Previous exposure to EPC Substation projects for US electric utilities.
