About the position

The Substation Electrical Engineer will support the High Voltage (HV) Operations Team in maintenance activities, project integration, and interdepartmental communication. This role serves as a subject matter expert on high voltage issues, ensuring the reliability and compliance of renewable energy facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical, high-voltage, collection system, and substation support to operating renewable generation facilities, including intermittent on-call support.
  • Participate in the engineering, design, and construction review processes, including review of collection system, substation, and transmission line designs.
  • Support new project commissioning, documentation support, and assist with project energization.
  • Review and continuously improve commissioning, maintenance, and standard operating procedures.
  • Review maintenance records and recommend corrective actions to ensure reliability and compliance with applicable NERC standards.
  • Develop, review, and maintain work instructions for reactive and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Develop and maintain electrical troubleshooting guides for intelligent electronic device (IED) training.
  • Conduct event analysis of protection system operations to determine misoperation status in support of meeting FERC or NERC requirements.
  • Develop and submit NERC MIDAS reports.
  • Develop structured feedback sessions for all lessons learned with project team to include misoperations, root cause analysis, and safety-related events.
  • Review and maintain IED settings repository.
  • Review and update project documentation.
  • Maintain compliance of NERC standards PRC-027 and validate/update arc flash studies.
  • Develop and implement site betterment projects including preparation of scope documents, exhibits, budgets, schedules, and requests for proposals.
  • Interact closely with internal teams to ensure that project needs and objectives are met.
  • Lead or participate in project meetings and conference calls.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on project plans, specifications, drawings, and documentation pertaining to renewable energy generation facilities.
  • Assist with updating of project documents that are NERC-related and act as subject matter expert during internal and external audits.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant technical experience.
  • Expert knowledge of medium- and high-voltage substation electrical equipment including relay protection systems, collection systems, transmission designs, and operations.
  • Experience with power generation or distribution event analysis preferred.
  • Experience with establishing HV field service preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, Project software suites, and SEL Equipment.
  • Experience with substation relay and protection system testing and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with LOTO and OTO procedures.
  • Familiarity with the operation of capacitor banks, transformer load tap changers, circuit breakers, and motor/manually operated air disconnect switches.
