Substation Electrician

About the position

The Substation Electrician at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is responsible for performing equipment operations and electrical maintenance within the PATH Substations and Switching Stations. This role involves the operation, maintenance, and repair of various high-tension electrical systems and associated power apparatus, ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical services.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the assembly, installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, alteration, dismantling, and/or repair of electrical and power apparatus throughout PATH.
• Prepare written reports and document test results as directed.
• Cut, bend, thread, and install conduit, raceways, and related hardware.
• Drill holes, install hangars, and perform other field construction work using hand and power tools.
• Clean, service, and/or paint junction boxes, power apparatus, and electrical housings.
• Assist in the installation, splicing, and testing of power and control cables; moving and handling heavy cable reels.
• Respond to emergencies, unusual occurrences, or weather affecting power and electrical facilities, including power outages and electrical malfunctions.
• Transport personnel, materials, equipment, and tools between various locations and work sites using a PATH vehicle.
• Work at elevated heights from ladders and bucket trucks, in severe weather conditions, and in cramped, slippery, dusty locations.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
• Three years of full-time continuous paid work experience at the journey level performing duties in the installation, care, testing, maintenance, and/or repair of electrical equipment.
• Valid Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

• Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and install motors, lighting systems, controllers, cables, and conduit.
• Experience as a Journeyman Level Electrician or Licensed Electrical Contractor with Medium Voltage electrical experience.
• Skilled in maintaining and repairing Medium Voltage electrical systems and switchgear.
• Skilled in maintaining and repairing 480vac electrical systems and switchgear.
• Skilled in maintaining and repairing 650vdc electrical systems and switchgear would be a plus.
• Knowledge of state and local electrical codes.
