About the position

The Substation Engineering Manager at Black & Veatch will lead a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians, managing diverse projects across design services and EPC programs. This role involves overseeing design quality, budget, and schedule while supporting client interactions and business development efforts. The position is integral to driving innovative energy solutions and ensuring compliance with client and industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians.
• Manage diverse and challenging projects across the portfolio of design services and EPC programs.
• Oversee design quality, budget, and schedule.
• Support client interaction, proposals, and business development.
• Develop and manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements across multiple disciplines for assigned projects.
• Actively manage project changes directly with the Client in coordination with the Project Manager.
• Review lower-level engineering work or assignments and coordinate multiple discipline activity.
• Develop good working relationships with project leadership, design teams, and support staff.
• Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.
• Provide support to business development and pursuit activities.
• Ensure client and industry standards are maintained on assigned projects.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and direction to team members.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
• Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
• P.E. License highly preferred.
• Experience managing Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) or design services substation and switchyard projects for investor-owned utilities in the United States.
• Five years of experience in design of substation facilities with strong understanding of overall project lifecycle, layout design and optimization, relay protection & control, civil/structural designs, and technical knowledge of major equipment associated with substation facilities.
• Good communication skills and interest in engaging with Clients to grow relationships.
• Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards.
• Working knowledge of procurement process and contract administration.
• Working knowledge of the proposal process and developing engineering estimates.
