About the position

The Substation Engineering Manager at Black & Veatch Corporation is responsible for leading a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians in managing diverse and challenging projects related to substation design services and EPC programs. This role involves overseeing design quality, budget, and schedule while supporting client interactions and business development efforts. The position is based in Denver, CO, and offers a hybrid work environment, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians.
  • Manage diverse and challenging projects across the portfolio of design services and EPC programs.
  • Oversee design quality, budget, and schedule for assigned projects.
  • Support client interaction, proposals, and business development activities.
  • Develop and manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements across multiple disciplines for assigned projects.
  • Actively manage project changes directly with the Client in coordination with the Project Manager.
  • Review lower-level engineering work or assignments.
  • Coordinate multiple discipline activity and may serve as the engineer of record for assigned projects.
  • Develop good working relationships with project leadership, design teams, and support staff.
  • Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
  • 5 years of experience in design of substation facilities with strong understanding of overall project lifecycle, layout design and optimization, relay protection & control, civil/structural designs, and technical knowledge of major equipment associated with substation facilities.
  • Good communication skills and interest in engaging with Clients to grow relationships.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards.
  • Working knowledge of procurement process and contract administration.
  • Working knowledge of the proposal process and developing engineering estimates.

Nice-to-haves

  • P.E. License highly preferred.
  • Experience managing Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) or design services substation and switchyard projects for investor owned utilities in the United States.
