About the position

Ulteig Engineers, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Lead Substation Electrical Engineer to support various Renewables, Utility, and Power projects. This role is pivotal as the Lead Electrical Engineer acts as a technical leader, applying standard engineering techniques and procedures on complex projects. The individual will be responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating detailed phases of assigned project work, ensuring that all engineering standards and practices are adhered to throughout the project lifecycle. In this position, the Lead Electrical Engineer will make design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications for utility substations, relay automation equipment, and associated drawings. The role requires performing calculations using engineering formulas and skills, as well as providing technical guidance to other engineers within the team. The successful candidate will lead complex substation projects, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team from the initial estimating and proposal stages through detailed design, commissioning, and construction support for energization. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, with a Master's degree being a plus. A minimum of 7 years of engineering experience is required, along with effective leadership and mentoring skills. Excellent verbal and written communication, time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential for success in this role. The candidate should be proficient in substation protection and control design, capable of reviewing and producing design drawings, and knowledgeable about substation electrical physical equipment and basic relay settings. Experience with on-site commissioning and knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) are also advantageous. The position may require up to 15% travel, and a valid driver's license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical leader for complex projects in the Renewables/Utility/Power sectors.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Make design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications for utility substations and relay automation equipment.
  • Perform calculations using engineering formulas and skills.
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers.
  • Lead complex substation projects with a multidisciplinary team from estimating and proposals through to commissioning and construction support.
  • Review and produce design drawings, including one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel elevations.
  • Perform AC & DC substation studies.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master's degree is a plus.
  • PE registration required.
  • 7+ years of engineering experience in relevant fields.
  • Effective leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with substation protection and control design and industry standards.
  • Capable of reviewing and producing design drawings, including one-line diagrams and schematics.
