About the position

The Project Engineer position at Mesa Associates, Inc. involves managing a Protection & Control (P&C) and Physical Design team for various projects, balancing project work and management responsibilities. The role requires strong technical knowledge in substation systems, effective communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with clients and team members to ensure project success.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate projects by completing project initiation documents, including detailed work scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Assist the project team in defining and clarifying project scope and requirements.
  • Maintain project status reporting system to keep track of actions and changes on assigned projects.
  • Lead the assigned project team and subcontractor to achieve project goals and ensure compliance with business processes.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering/design work for projects.
  • Review completed project work for errors and serve as Engineer of Record for projects requiring a PE Stamp.
  • Assist the Project Manager in controlling project expenditures and schedule performance.
  • Maximize project profitability through effective budgeting, resource utilization, and cost controls.
  • Communicate effectively with project team, subcontractors, and clients to facilitate coordination and flow of technical information.
  • Work with the project team to identify, document, and resolve changes impacting project schedule and budget.
  • Ensure timely project close-out and archiving in accordance with procedures.
  • Analyze project performance metrics and recommend corrective actions to the project management team.
  • Support the development and implementation of project engineering/management tools and standards.
  • Conduct large meetings with project stakeholders to drive consensus and resolution of challenges.

Requirements

  • BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university.
  • 6 years of relevant project experience.
  • Tangible multi-year experience leading substation design projects.
  • Strong knowledge of medium to extra high voltage substation protection & control systems and/or physical design layout requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and interface with clients, vendors, engineers, and colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively with clients and peers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and scheduling software.
  • Working knowledge of corporate accounting practices and business operations.
  • Willingness to develop, promote, and comply with safety requirements.
  • Ability to understand and implement new processes/procedures regarding Project and Program management.
  • Knowledge of the Project Management Institute's (PMI's) standards for Organizational Project Management (OPM).
  • Experience with electrical utility equipment, systems, and projects/programs.
