About the position

Paxon Energy is seeking a skilled and experienced Substation Structural Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in the design, analysis, and optimization of substation structures, ensuring the safety, stability, and reliability of electrical substation infrastructure. As a Substation Structural Engineer, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical and civil engineers, to implement high-voltage electrical projects and deliver sustainable energy solutions. Your expertise will be crucial in the successful execution of these projects, contributing to the future of energy. In this position, you will work directly under the supervision of the Electrical Operations Manager. Your responsibilities will include performing structural analysis, calculations, and simulations to ensure the integrity of substation structures such as foundations, steel structures, and equipment supports. You will utilize engineering software to assess load distribution, wind loads, seismic loads, and temperature variations, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams will be essential during the conceptual and detailed design phases to optimize structural configurations and material selection. You will also be responsible for ensuring that all designs meet industry standards and regulations, performing quality checks on design documentation, and preparing comprehensive technical reports and design specifications. Innovation and problem-solving will be key aspects of your role, as you will identify opportunities for enhancing project efficiency and sustainability while addressing complex engineering challenges. Additionally, you will provide construction support by collaborating with construction teams, conducting site visits, and ensuring alignment with approved design plans. Staying updated with industry advancements and changes in codes and regulations will be vital for your continued success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis, calculations, and simulations to ensure the integrity and stability of substation structures.
  • Utilize engineering software to assess load distribution, wind loads, seismic loads, and temperature variations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop efficient and reliable substation designs.
  • Provide input during the conceptual and detailed design phases to optimize structural configurations and material selection.
  • Ensure that all designs and analysis meet relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Perform thorough quality checks and reviews of design documentation to minimize errors and ensure accuracy.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, design specifications, and drawings for substation structures.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation in substation design, construction methods, and materials.
  • Address complex engineering challenges and provide creative solutions to unexpected issues.
  • Collaborate closely with construction teams during the execution phase, addressing design-related questions or issues.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure construction aligns with approved design plans.
  • Stay up to date with industry advancements, emerging technologies, and changes in codes and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field with a focus on structural engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural engineering, with a focus on high-voltage substations.
  • Proven experience in the design and analysis of substation structures, including foundations, steel supports, and equipment platforms.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of relevant industry codes and standards, including IEEE, IEC, ASCE, and ACI.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical documentation and project coordination.
  • Complies with, enforces safety standards, and understands client Transmission, Distribution, and Contractor Safety Handbook requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification in structural engineering is preferred.
