About the position

As a Substation Technician Apprentice at Sunflower Electric Power Corporation in Great Bend, Kansas, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and constructing high voltage electrical substations, which are essential for keeping the lights on for Kansans. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on transformers and various mechanical and electrical components of transmission substations. You will be involved in a variety of tasks including the construction, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution substation equipment. This includes working with power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and various electrical and electronic systems, primarily focusing on circuits between 48 and 600 volts. In this role, you will gain valuable knowledge and hands-on experience through a utility apprenticeship program, which is designed to further your career in the electrical utility field. You will work alongside a talented and safety-conscious team dedicated to your professional growth. The position involves daily travel across Sunflower's service territory, providing you with the chance to collaborate with contractors and various departments within the company. You will also develop skills in reading and interpreting construction and manufacturers' drawings, specifications, schematic diagrams, and substation drawings. Additionally, you will contribute to the company's mission of achieving the lowest cost, most reliable, and environmentally sound transmission and substation infrastructure. The apprenticeship program is structured to provide you with the necessary training and experience to excel in this field, ensuring that you are well-prepared for a successful career as a Substation Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the construction, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution substation equipment.
  • Work on power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and various electrical and electronic systems.
  • Travel across Sunflower's service territory to perform duties related to substation maintenance and construction.
  • Gain experience in reading and understanding construction and manufacturers' drawings, specifications, and schematic diagrams.
  • Provide support to achieve reliable and environmentally sound transmission and substation infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Two year post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year control circuit wiring and installation experience preferred for the apprentice level.
  • For the journey level, two year post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics and four years electric utility substation experience with increasingly responsible duties related to the installation and maintenance of substation equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of a recognized substation apprenticeship program is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with control circuit wiring and installation.
  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting schematic diagrams and substation drawings.
