About the position

The Substitute Bus Driver performs intermediate semiskilled human support work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events. The work is performed under the regular supervision of the director of transportation and appropriate principals. This position requires the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The job involves climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and visual acuity is necessary for the operation of motor vehicles or equipment, as well as for observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions, and may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, requiring the use of specialized personal protective equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Driving school bus; picking up and delivering students to/from school.
  • Performing pre-trip inspection of school bus; reporting operating and equipment deficiencies.
  • Washing bus; cleaning bus inside and out.
  • Fueling bus as required.
  • Obeying all traffic laws and observing mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations.
  • Transporting only authorized students, school personnel and/or authorized chaperons on special trips.
  • Reporting all accidents and completing required reports.
  • Conducting periodic emergency bus evacuation drills.
  • Transporting students to special events and field trips.
  • Recording mileage; maintaining various records and preparing a variety of reports on activities.
  • Ensuring passenger safety; maintaining discipline on bus; making reports as necessary.
  • Making bus available for scheduled maintenance and/or repairs.
  • Performing related tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must pass physical examination as prescribed by the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must maintain a satisfactory driving record from the Division of Motor Vehicles that meets state requirements and indicates positive driving points.
