About the position
The Custodian position at Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is essential for maintaining a clean, orderly, and secure environment within the school facilities. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the custodian will be responsible for a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks that ensure the school is a safe and welcoming place for students, faculty, and visitors. This role is critical in supporting the overall mission of OUSD to create a Full Service Community District where every student thrives. The custodian will perform essential functions such as sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and sealing floors, as well as vacuuming rugs and carpets. Additional responsibilities include dusting, washing, and polishing furniture and woodwork, emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, and maintaining cleanliness in restrooms, locker rooms, and showers. The custodian will also be tasked with washing windows, polishing metal work, and cleaning chalkboards, ensuring that all areas of the school are kept in pristine condition. In preparation for special events or meetings, the custodian will move and arrange furniture and equipment in multipurpose rooms or classrooms. They will also be responsible for picking up paper and debris from school grounds and adjacent areas, sweeping concrete surfaces, and performing emergency cleanup services as needed due to breakage, vandalism, spills, or illness. Furthermore, the custodian will assist in maintaining school security and fire safety, including the upkeep of fire extinguishers, and will communicate effectively with students, faculty, and the public.
Responsibilities
- Sweep, mop, strip, wax, and seal floors; vacuum rugs and carpets.
- Dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork.
- Empty and clean waste receptacles, including trash barrels.
- Clean restroom, locker room, and shower.
- Wash windows and walls, polish metal work, and clean chalkboards.
- Move and arrange furniture and equipment in preparing multipurpose rooms or classrooms for special events or meetings.
- Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walk areas, and the areas adjacent to the school facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to the school buildings.
- Perform special maintenance projects as assigned.
- Perform emergency cleanup service resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling, and illness.
- Assist in maintaining school security and fire safety as assigned; assist in maintaining fire extinguishers.
- Communicate with students, faculty, and the public.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
- Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed.
- Personality and character suitable to work in schools.
- Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, Tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in a custodial or maintenance role.
- Knowledge of basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques.
