About the position

The Substitute Food Service Lead assists in the preparation and serving of food at a designated food service facility, ensuring cleanliness and sanitation of the work environment. This role supports the Food Service Lead and is responsible for food preparation, serving, and maintaining kitchen equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Washes and prepares eating and serving areas; sets up steam tables; sets out trays, food and beverages.
• Portions and serves food to students and staff according to established procedures.
• Prepares fruits, vegetables and other foods for serving or cooking; assists in preparing foods such as salads, hot and cold sandwiches, sliced meats and sliced or grated cheese.
• Maintains work areas and serving areas in a sanitary manner; washes and cleans counters and steam tables; cleans and stores plates, utensils, pots and pans, trays and kitchen equipment.
• Assists in storing unused food and supplies according to established procedures; disposes of unusable leftovers and garbage.
• Operates and cleans a variety of standard kitchen equipment such as dishwasher, slicers, graters, can openers, steam tables, ovens and plastic wrap sealing machine.
• Provides work direction to student helpers as assigned.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Food Handlers Certificate (upon being hired).
• ServSafe Certification.
• California Identification/California Driver's License (required at time of employment).
• Two current letters of recommendation dated within the last year.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge of methods of preparing sandwiches, salads, vegetables and other foods for cooking and consumption.
• Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
• Sanitation and safety practices related to cooking and serving food.
• Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements.
