About the position

The Substitute Instructional Assistant for Special Education - Mod/Sev/EBD plays a crucial role in supporting certificated teachers by reinforcing instruction for students with disabilities. This part-time, on-call position involves assisting in the preparation of instructional materials, implementing individual education plans, and providing routine clerical support. The role requires working with students who have specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavior problems, and other disabilities, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of special education students.
  • Monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects.
  • Assist assigned teacher with the implementation of individual education plans.
  • Help students complete classroom assignments, homework, and projects in various subject areas.
  • Ensure students understand classroom rules and procedures; assist by answering questions.
  • Confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
  • Report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials.
  • Implement research-based interventions under the supervision of the assigned teacher.
  • Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures.
  • Grade students' tests and assignments as assigned; maintain records and student files related to attendance, grades, and progress.
  • Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, and bulletin boards.
  • Assist students with independent living skills and self-help skills.
  • Ensure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.
  • Provide extensive service need students with hygiene care and implement special health and medical instructions per the students' IEP.
  • Assist students with personal difficulties and intervene in potential conflicts using appropriate approaches.
  • Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier and computer.
  • Communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and others to exchange information and resolve issues.
  • Provide routine first aid to injured students and respond to medical emergencies.

Requirements

  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience working with children with disabilities in an organized setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in special education settings.
  • Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices related to children with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with behavior modification techniques.
