About the position

The Substitute Teacher Assistant at the University of California, Berkeley, plays a vital role in providing developmental play-based childcare for children aged 3 months to 5 years. This part-time position involves supporting classroom activities, maintaining a safe environment, and engaging with children to foster their learning and development. The role requires collaboration with teaching staff and participation in professional development to enhance caregiving practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provides caregiving functions as needed, including diapering, napping, feeding, and nurturing.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment for children.
  • Practices responsive caregiving in daily care activities.
  • Helps organize, set up, supervise, and clean up curriculum activities that stimulate children's curiosity.
  • Engages in intentional interactions with children to support teaching and learning.
  • Observes and interacts with children individually, sharing observations with staff.
  • Provides feedback to teachers to support individual needs of children.
  • Contributes to parent/teacher conferences by providing input to teachers.
  • Uses respectful language and positive guidance when addressing children's behavior.
  • Participates in classroom management to maintain a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Supports the implementation of best practices in early childhood education.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of developmental needs and appropriate learning experiences for children aged 3 months to 5 years.
  • Familiarity with child development theory and practice.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand or walk for up to 4 hours per day.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills, including data entry and use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work with diverse clientele using patience and sensitivity.
  • Proof of current negative TB clearance and up-to-date vaccinations required.

Nice-to-haves

  • 12 or more Early Childhood Education (ECE) units.
