About the position

Westtown School is seeking experienced substitute teachers for our Lower School, which encompasses grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade. The ideal candidates will possess a deep understanding of the cognitive and social-emotional development of elementary school children. We are looking for substitute teachers who are available for per diem assignments as well as longer-term substitute roles for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and support to students in grades Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade during the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Implement lesson plans and adapt them as necessary to meet the needs of students.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
  • Manage classroom behavior effectively, ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents regarding student progress and classroom activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience with elementary-aged children in a classroom or large group setting.
  • Demonstrated passion and joy for working with Lower School students in grades PreK-5.
  • Knowledge of child development and a commitment to social-emotional learning, differentiated instruction, and inquiry and project-based teaching.
  • Strong student-centered and community-oriented classroom management skills centered on clear expectations, student support and growth, and a restorative solution approach.
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices.
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to connect meaningfully with students, teachers, and staff throughout our diverse community.
  • Strong affinity for the mission and strategic vision of Westtown School and an educational philosophy consistent with the school's Quaker values.
