About the position

SEEQS: the School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability, a public charter middle school located in Nuuanu, is seeking a dedicated and passionate Substitute Teacher (on call) to join our team. This role is essential in providing consistency in the absence of primary teachers, ensuring that our curriculum is implemented effectively while maintaining a strong and healthy school culture. As a Substitute Teacher, you will be responsible for following substitute plans with care and quality, creating an intellectually and physically safe learning environment for students, and communicating critical information to primary teachers. The ideal candidate will have experience working with middle school-aged children and will be proficient in using technology. You will lead a student-centered classroom that emphasizes inquiry, collaboration, and self-exploration. The role involves implementing a research-based, standards-aligned curriculum that enables students to develop essential skills, tools, and knowledge. You will also support a project-based, interdisciplinary course focused on the Essential Question of Sustainability, collaborating with several other teachers who have varied content expertise. Additionally, you will serve as a mentor/advisor to a group of students in Advisory, supporting their success, health, happiness, and intellectual safety. Participation in morning Physical Activity with students is also part of the role. The Substitute Teacher position is a casual hire role, with hours typically scheduled between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM, and partial days may be possible. The start date for this position is as soon as possible. This is a part-time, per diem position with a pay range of $23.57 to $27.72 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Follow substitute plans with care and quality.

Requirements

  • Experience working with middle school-aged children.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher (preferred).
  • Three or more years of experience teaching at the middle school level (preferred).
  • Valid Hawaii Teaching License in a subject area of instruction (preferred).
  • Experience working with students with special needs (preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Classroom experience.

  • Significant professional experience in content area.
