About the position

Under the direction of the Area Administrator, provide directed learning experiences in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains, daily living skills and vocational training for severely handicapped students 3 to 22 years of age; oversee support services to students; supervise instructional assistants and volunteers in the classroom; perform other related duties as assigned. Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the teacher provides directed learning experiences in academic skills, social skills, living skills, job skills and career planning for general and special education students attending the Community School, the Independent Study Program or students detained in the San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Services Center. Oversees testing and career counseling services. Directs support staff and volunteers in the classroom. Assists and works as a team with the County Probation Department and Mental Health Department staff assigned to the Community School. Assists and works as a team with the County Probation Department staff assigned to the Juvenile Services Center with security and rehabilitation of the youth; plans and implements a program for each student. Participates in the IEP process, including but not limited to; assessment, development, review, and implementation of IEPs. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid current California teaching credential such as Multiple Subject, Single Subject, or Education Specialist preferred.
  • 30 day substitute permits are acceptable.
  • Experience teaching Special Education and/or at-promise youth.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
