About the position

The Teacher Substitute position is a part-time role within the Early Childhood department, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This position is essential for providing coverage in classrooms that accommodate 8 to 20 children, ensuring that educational activities are conducted in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards and the regulations set forth by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). The Teacher Substitute will assist in planning and supervising classroom activities, working collaboratively with program staff to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the children. The program operates Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, and the schedule may vary based on program needs. In this role, the Teacher Substitute will be responsible for supporting the classroom environment by maintaining safety and sanitation standards, assisting in the planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate programming, and fostering positive relationships with children and families. The position requires ongoing observation and assessment of children's health and behavior, as well as participation in professional development opportunities. The Teacher Substitute will also be expected to maintain confidentiality regarding family records and communicate effectively with staff and parents about children's progress and needs. The role demands flexibility, as the Teacher Substitute may need to cover for staff as required. Additionally, the position requires physical capability to lift up to 35 pounds and the completion of various background checks and training certifications, including Covid-19 vaccination and Mandated Reporter training every two years.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the maintenance of a safe and sanitary environment in accordance with Department of Health and Head Start requirements.
  • Supporting staff in the planning and implementation of programming that addresses the developmental needs of children.
  • Working cooperatively with the teacher and coordinator to meet children's goals and objectives.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of family records and communications regarding child behavior and parent interactions.
  • Notifying the Lead Teacher of any concerns or observations regarding child health and behavior.
  • Participating in ongoing observation and assessments of children's health, behavior, and development.
  • Consulting with the teacher before communicating information about individual children to parents.
  • Following state regulations and agency policies regarding the prevention and reporting of child maltreatment.
  • Participating in coaching opportunities, professional development trainings, and reflective supervision sessions.
  • Participating in annual performance evaluations to set professional goals.
  • Practicing positive teacher-child relationships by engaging with children at their level.
  • Being flexible to cover for staff as needed.
  • Completing other duties and special projects as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with some college credits or Child Development Associate (CDA) preferred.
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Ability to work with children and families with special developmental, social, or cultural needs.
  • Ability to interpret safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with staff and participants.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in early childhood education settings.
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and DOHMH regulations.
