About the position

The Substitute Teaching Assistant for Special Education (SPE) is responsible for supporting students with behavioral management needs and/or physical disabilities within the GST BOCES Region. This role involves assisting with instruction, implementing lesson plans, and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment. The position requires physical capability to meet the diverse needs of students, including heavy lifting and physical interventions, while exemplifying the values of service, leadership, collaboration, and integrity.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the instruction of students according to unit plans/lesson plans provided by the teacher.
• Demonstrate knowledge of Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans, including writing and implementing them.
• Provide behavior management and physical interventions as needed.
• Maintain anecdotal records and data on student behavior and academics.
• Collaborate with all staff involved in the education of the students.
• Ensure a safe, positive, and caring learning environment for all students.
• Take on the role of the teacher in their absence when necessary.
• Carry out all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Valid NYS Teaching Assistant Certification; must possess at least a Level 1 Teaching Assistant Certificate.
• Experience working with students with special needs preferred.
• Ability to perform heavy lifting (50 pounds or more) and assist with toileting and diapering.
• Knowledge of State and Federal Special Education regulations.
• Good problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to provide instruction following the New York State Common Core Learning Standards.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) preferred.
