About the position

Michigan Sugar Company is seeking a dedicated Sugar Specialist for a temporary campaign opportunity at the Croswell Factory, running from September through December. This hourly position is part of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers Local # 261-G. The Sugar Specialist will play a crucial role in operating sugar packaging equipment and loading bulk trucks and trailers with sugar or sugar beet co-products, ensuring compliance with customer specifications and regulatory standards, including Safe Quality Food requirements. In this role, the Sugar Specialist will be responsible for filling and accurately measuring bulk sugar trailers and rail cars, performing quality checks to ensure that all finished products meet customer requirements, and completing necessary documentation for all operations. The position may require the use of computers and adjustments to machine programming. Additionally, the Sugar Specialist will set up and operate a sugar tote filling machine and may be trained to operate a powdered sugar mill to produce quality products. Effective communication is essential, as the specialist must report any issues to the team leader or other team members to facilitate resolution. Adherence to safe work practices and procedures is mandatory for all assigned tasks. This position is dynamic and may involve additional duties as assigned by supervision, making flexibility and adaptability key traits for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Operate sugar packaging equipment and load bulk trucks and trailers with sugar or sugar beet co-products.
  • Fill and properly measure bulk sugar trailers and rail cars.
  • Perform quality checks to verify that finished products meet customer requirements.
  • Complete necessary documentation for all operations performed, including computer use and machine programming adjustments.
  • Set up and operate sugar tote filling machine.
  • Train to operate a powdered sugar mill to produce quality products.
  • Report problems to the team leader or other team members for resolution.
  • Follow all safe work practices and procedures for assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • Previous work experience in a production environment is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn the Rapid system.
  • Ability to learn, follow, and promote AIB, SQF, and GMP quality system guidelines and safety practices.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 to 70 lbs and work in various conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Maintain a valid fork truck license.
  • Availability to work any shift and weekend overtime as required.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, use catwalks, bend, and lift throughout the day.
  • High School diploma is preferred.

  • Experience with quality systems is preferred.
