About the position

The position is designed for engineering students to gain practical experience in Rolling Stock Engineering at Amtrak. Interns will assist the Rolling Stock Engineering team with various tasks related to equipment design, troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance planning, while also learning about safety standards and operational practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Rolling Stock Engineering group with equipment design and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with testing, inspections, and design of operating and capital maintenance planning.
  • Analyze failure data, physical components, and system design to determine root causes of failures.
  • Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls.
  • Assist in the development and release of work instructions, maintenance procedures, modifications, models, drawings, and/or schematics.
  • Provide technical, logistical, and administrative support to ensure successful completion of assigned project tasks.

Requirements

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a minimum sophomore status.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous heavy machinery or railroad industry experience.
  • Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry.

Benefits

  • Hourly pay range of $17.50 to $35.00 based on factors including school year and program of study.
  • Paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges and one PTO day per academic year.
