About the position

Honeybee Robotics, a Blue Origin Company, is seeking a Software Engineering Intern for the summer of 2025. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of robotics, contributing to the development of innovative exploration systems designed for extreme planetary environments. The intern will be part of the Exploration Systems team located in Southern California, which has a rich history of supporting planetary science missions, including every NASA Mars rover since Spirit and Opportunity. The team is dedicated to advancing In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) solutions, aiming to make significant contributions to space exploration. As a Software Engineering Intern, you will have the chance to develop and implement new software for robotic applications, maintain robotic control and measurement software systems for both PCs and embedded systems, and contribute to the overall robotics software architecture and roadmap decisions. You will also evaluate and identify improvements to system designs with a specific focus on robust autonomy, and create technical documentation for complex systems, including specifications and hazard analyses. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience, feedback from managers, and opportunities to learn about other parts of the organization through various events and social gatherings.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement new software for robotic applications.
  • Maintain robotic control and measurement software systems for both PCs and embedded systems.
  • Contribute to overall robotics software architecture and roadmap decisions.
  • Evaluate and identify improvements to system designs with a focus on robust autonomy.
  • Create technical documentation for complex systems, including specifications and hazard analyses.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program majoring in robotics, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Completed at least one year of full-time coursework post high school graduation (sophomore standing).
  • Available to work full time for 12 weeks while not concurrently enrolled in coursework.
  • Fundamental understanding of computer architectures, information representation, control flow, and memory management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Development experience with robotic systems and theory (e.g., mechatronics, kinematics, dynamics, sensing, control, planning, etc.).
  • C++ development on both non-real-time and real-time platforms.
  • Python development for rapid algorithm development and data analysis.
  • Development of distributed asynchronous and deterministic systems.
  • Fluency in distributed software version control with Git and modern distributed software development and collaboration workflows.
