About the position

As a Mechanical Engineering summer Intern here at Western Digital, you will have the opportunity to gain real world hands-on experiences and contribute to the daily activities required of a Wafer FAB Maintenance Engineering Team member of a Global Organization. Candidate will gain exposure to industry standard Wafer Fab production tools. Candidates will work closely with our team of experienced professionals, learning from their expertise and applying your knowledge to day-to-day activities and challenges. This internship will provide you with professional development, and valuable insights into the industry for your potential future career in Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will be able to work with minimal supervision, take initiative and collaborate effectively; they will demonstrate a willingness to learn, flexibility, creative problem solving, exemplary communication skills and an ability to think on their feet.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Lead Machinist on customer design/build projects
  • Learn Safety and Quality standards in tool component design, prototyping, and testing
  • Use SolidWorks for 3D designs/printing, CNC machining, and hands-on fabrication of sub-assemblies
  • Generate drawings with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Support reverse engineering efforts of components by assisting in measurements, data collection, and documentation
  • Gain knowledge of control systems and/or PLC (Process Logic Control)
  • Understand electronics integration into mechanical systems
  • Learn how to calibrate Temp/Humidity sensors for Class 100 Cleanroom
  • Diagnose and repair failed electrical components from Wafer Fab production tools
  • Understand how to read/understand basic electrical schematics
  • Backup tool hard drives and also back them up in the cloud
  • Engage with Maintenance, Engineering and Software Team on enhanced online Technician Certification process
  • Track and generate weekly progress reports on Maintenance activities
  • Generate and Create KPI (Key Performance Indicator) PowerPoint presentation for the weekly Engineering Status Meeting
  • Remove mechanical components from production tools in a clean room that need servicing/repair
  • Hands-on rebuild of mechanical components
  • Gain experience of how mechanical assemblies work in HiVac production tools
  • Learn how to leak check HiVac components once servicing/repairs are completed
  • Hands-on basic troubleshooting techniques on production tools that have been called down
  • Observe tools being converted from 6” product to 8” product
  • Attend meetings on Predictive Maintenance activities

Requirements

  • Current students seeking a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field with a graduation date between December 2025 and June 2026.
  • Right to work in the US without requiring Western Digital to commence or sponsor an immigration case to employ you at any point in the future.

  • Candidates who will not require relocation to the San Jose, CA will be preferred.
