About the position

Allegheny Health Network is actively considering future 2025 Nurse Externs for the following AHN Hospital locations: Allegheny General Hospital, Allegheny Valley Hospital, Canonsburg Hospital, Forbes Hospital, Grove City Hospital, Jefferson Hospital, West Penn Hospital, Wexford Hospital, and St. Vincent Hospital (Erie). The Nurse Extern will perform day-to-day clinical and patient care activities under the direct supervision of a professional nurse. This role is designed to provide nursing students with hands-on experience in a clinical setting, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world situations. The extern will be expected to demonstrate competency in various clinical skills, communicate pertinent patient data accurately, and utilize time management skills to organize and prioritize patient care activities. Additionally, the extern will assume responsibility for their own professional development and may be assigned other duties as required. This position is an excellent opportunity for nursing students to gain valuable experience and enhance their skills in a supportive environment.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency in clinical skills (i.e. hygiene, nutritional needs, vital signs, and specimens).
• Communicates pertinent patient data accurately and utilizes time management skills to organize and prioritize patient care activities.
• Assumes responsibility for own professional development.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

• Minimum CPR - American Heart Association certification required.
• Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate required.
• Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate required.
• Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate required.
• Enrolled in an approved/accredited diploma/degree nursing program.
• Projected December 2025 or Spring 2026 nursing program graduate in good academic standing.
