About the position

The Rolling Stock Engineering Intern position at Amtrak is designed to attract new engineers and promote careers in Rolling Stock Engineering. This internship provides an entry point for engineering students to apply their skills in both office and field settings, gaining firsthand experience in various aspects of rolling stock engineering while assisting the Rolling Stock Engineering team with Amtrak's Locomotive fleets across the country.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Rolling Stock Engineering group with equipment design and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with testing, inspections, and design of operating and capital maintenance planning.
  • Analyze failure data, physical components, system design, and input from maintenance personnel to determine root causes of failures.
  • Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls.
  • Assist in the development and release of work instructions, maintenance procedures, modifications, models, drawings, and/or schematics.
  • Provide technical, logistical, and administrative support to ensure successful completion of assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Become familiar with Mechanical safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices.

Requirements

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a minimum sophomore status.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous heavy machinery or railroad industry experience.
  • Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry.

Benefits

  • Hourly pay range of $17.50 to $35.00 based on factors including school year and program of study.
  • Paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges.
  • One (1) PTO day per academic year.
