About the position

The Summer 2025 Surface Water Intern position at the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency offers college students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental protection and compliance. Interns will receive training in various aspects of the surface water program and assist technical staff with program duties across multiple locations in Ohio. This role is designed to provide practical experience in stormwater management, permitting, and water quality standards, contributing to the agency's mission of protecting the environment and public health.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training and orientation on the surface water program.
  • Assist technical staff with program duties.
  • Review Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans for compliance with NPDES permits.
  • Perform inspections of construction and industrial sites for NPDES compliance.
  • Develop reports and letters based on plan reviews and site inspections.
  • Collect and summarize data for wastewater treatment and collection permit applications.
  • Review permit applications and detail plans.
  • Prepare reports and tabulate information as requested.
  • Research and summarize literature on chemical water quality criteria and standards.
  • Update GIS databases with new water quality standard designations.
  • Organize water quality data and perform database entry.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college degree program related to the position or recently graduated.
  • Major in Environmental Science, Water Resources, Chemistry, Engineering (Environmental, Civil, Chemical), or a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, public relations, agency policies, and applicable permits.
  • Skills in computers, including word processing and database work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data analytics and data entry.
  • Familiarity with environmental services and facilities maintenance.
  • Strong organizing and planning skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Customer focus.
